Dependency: A Life with the Holy Spirit
“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything that I have told you.”
John 14:26
One tendency that we have as human beings is to live in independence. We’re taught in society that being independent, doing life alone and apart from community is the better option! We’re taught that asking for help is a weakness, but that’s not actually how the Father created us to live. A life of isolation is not His best for us. He gave us the Holy Spirit, the ultimate Helper, to guide us through a life He knew we couldn’t live alone.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
When it was time for Jesus to go back to be with the Father after His resurrection, He knew the importance of not leaving His people with the Spirit. He knew that we wouldn’t be able to be all that He created us to be and live the life he designed for us without help. So, He left us with the Holy Spirit.
Truth be told, we can’t do anything without the Spirit of God enabling us. The Bible tells us in Romans 8 that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives within us. The Holy Spirit lives within us to direct, guide, and lead us, but also to ignite us with the power to do what God is calling us to do and be who He created us to be.
The Holy Spirit is a person and He longs for communion with us. He longs to be recognized and given space to have His way in our lives. He doesn’t just take over our lives life like a rude houseguest, but rather He waits to be invited in.
A Life with the Holy Spirit
It’s really easy to make decisions based on our own wisdom and understanding. We can lean on our intellect and rely on our reasoning to make decisions and move forward. But, if we truly want to live in the plans that God has for us, as who He created us to be, we need the help of the Holy Spirit.
We must live in dependency on Him. The Holy Spirit is the voice of truth. As we read the Bible He makes the Word come alive. He reveals to us the nature of Jesus and the Father. He brings conviction, calling us higher and deeper into the truth of our identity. He reveals our destiny and empowers us to step into it.
He is the source. He never leaves us. We may forget and turn our back on Him, but He is always with us. He brings about transformation and leads us into greater freedom. He is our Friend, Comforter, and Helper in everything we do. He makes us more like Jesus.
Continuous Dependency
“Remain in Me and I in you…” -John 15:4
This is a promise from the Lord. If we remain in Him, if we lean into dependency on Him and His way, He promises to be there in return. When we live life in dependency on the Spirit. We need Him!
Jesus lived in continuous communion with the Father and He never did anything unless He saw the Father doing it first. Jesus waited on His Father and depended on Him to lead Him. It must be the same for us.
It can be hard to fully trust Holy Spirit without truly knowing Him. Lots of things can get in the way of trust and dependency. The enemy likes to whisper lies, stir up fear, and keep us in isolation. But, we were made for more. We were designed to live courageously in the light of the truth. We were made for unity with the Spirit of God.
