Managing Yourself Well
In a society buzzing with productivity and busyness, it can be easy to forget ourselves in the process. We can become so consumed with what we’re doing that we don’t stop to take inventory of what’s happening within ourselves.
Healthy self-management is a lost art form, but it’s time for it to make a comeback! Let’s look at what self-management truly is and some tips to help us practice it in our daily lives.
What is self-management?
Self-management is the ability to regulate and navigate our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to reach our goals. It looks like taking ownership of our choices, knowing what our priorities are, and utilizing our time and resources to the fullest.
Self-management encompasses many different skills and qualities that contribute to our ability to navigate life, work, and relationships successfully. Overall, self-management empowers us to live and lead powerful and full lives by taking ownership of our choices and actions.
Why is self-management important?
The Father has created each one of us for a purpose. He’s placed within us dreams and plans that He has designed us to see come to pass through our lives. Self-management helps us to achieve our goals and steward ourselves well in the process.
It can be very easy to neglect ourselves on the journey toward our dreams. We’re focused on what we’re doing and where we’re going, but we forget that we’re a human being with needs! Self-management is healthy and it’s a great way to steward who God has designed us to be.
Myth about Self-Management
It's important to understand that self-management does not mean hyper-independence or isolation. Self-management takes a look within ourselves and recognizes where we need the help and collaboration of others. Learning to ask and accept help from others is key to managing and leading ourselves well.
Tips for Healthy Self-Management
Now that we know what self-management is, what it’s not, and why it’s so important, here are a few practical tips for practicing self-management in our day-to-day lives.
1-Self Awareness
Without being introspective and without self-condemnation, self-management takes a look within. The ability to understand our strengths, weaknesses, values, and emotions is a foundational aspect of self-management. Self-awareness allows us to make healthy decisions aligned with our personal goals and dreams.
2-Open Communication
Learning how to effectively communicate with ourselves and others is part of self-management. Clear communication helps us understand personal needs, express our intentions and needs, and collaborate successfully with others. Understanding yourself allows for better communication with others. When you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses, you can communicate more effectively and work together more successfully with other people.
3-Healthy Boundaries
Self-management and boundaries are closely connected. Managing ourselves well looks like knowing when to set and how to maintain boundaries in all areas of life. Time management, emotional and relational boundaries, asking for help, and work/life balance are all vital for good self-management.
4-Consistent Curiosity and Learning
Self-management and consistent learning are interconnected aspects of personal development. Stay curious and teachable. Take time to ask questions and learn new things. The ability to manage ourselves involves not only taking ownership of our actions and choices but also actively seeking opportunities for continuous learning and growth.
